NAVI MUMBAI: The APMC administration in Mumbai decided on Friday to close the five shipyards of the wholesale market, which includes the markets for grains, spices, vegetables, fruits and onion potatoes from May 11, until further notice, due to the increase coronavirus cases. Wholesalers and wholesale brokers have been asked to ship essentials purchased from farmers to Mumbai markets directly, bypassing the Vashi APMC to ensure that the supply chain is not disrupted due to market closings.
The decision to close the five markets was made after stakeholders, such as merchants, brokers, carriers and workers, expressed their reluctance to work out of fear of risk to their lives after an increase in the number of positive cases reported since APMC market yard in recent days. A meeting of the top bureaucrats in the APMC market was held on Friday to decide on the course of action. Various merchant agencies also wrote to APMC management to close the market.
The decision to close the market was a preventive measure, since thousands of people go daily to the wholesale market. Formerly Navi Mumbai Mayor Jayawant Sutar, NMMC Administrator Annasaheb Misal, local MLA Ganesh Naik it had demanded the closure of APMC immediately in view of the increasing number of crown cases, as the wholesale market has become the crown access point in the city.
According to APMC sources, a review will be carried out on May 15 to verify if the situation is conducive to restarting the market. APMC Undersecretary Krishnakant Pawar said: “During the closure we will carry out disinfection and disinfection of the entire market, prior to the revision date. Currently, most merchants are shipping essentials directly to Mumbai and the rest should follow suit. ” APMC Director Sanjay Pansare He said: “The assessment of all concerned is the need for the hour.”
