Aurangabad: At least 15 migrant workers who slept on the train tracks were crushed by a freight train in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra on Friday morning, police said.

Two other workers were injured in the tragic accident that took place at 5.15 a.m. under the jurisdiction of the Karmad police station, an official said.

The workers, who were walking to Bhusawal from Jalna in central Maharashtra along the train tracks, were returning to their home state, Madhya Pradesh, an official at the Karmad police station told PTI.

They were sleeping on the train tracks due to exhaustion when they were hit by the freight train coming from Jalna, he said.

“The workers, who worked in a steel factory in Jalna, went on foot to their home state last night. They came to Karmad and slept on the tracks because they were tired,” said police officer Santosh Khetmalas.

Fifteen workers lost their lives in the accident, while two others were injured, he said, adding that three workers who were also part of the group survived while sleeping some distance from the train tracks.
