Jammu: Riyaz Naikoo – a senior Hizbul Mujahideen commander, fled for eight years, was killed in a meeting with security forces in his native village in the Pulwama district of Kashmir on May 6. Naikoo, who had a reward of Rs 12 lakh on his head, has been active in the Valley for the past 8 years.
According to the intelligence office, he was the only Hizbul commander who was in contact with the head of the Salahuddin terror team in Pakistan. The agency added that security forces in the Valley were closely monitoring Naikoo’s movement and destroyed its dozen hiding places in recent months. According to the police record, Naikoo, in addition to being active in terrorism-related activities, was also involved in the kidnapping and murder of several members of the Jammu and Kashmir police.
How Operation Naikoo ran:
Operation Naikoo was not easy for the Jammu and Kashmir police, the CRPF, and the Indian Army who neutralized the Hizbul Operational Commander in a joint encounter. The teams had used human and technical intelligence to track the dreaded terrorist for several months before shooting him down.
A special team was formed from the Jammu and Kashmir police, under the leadership of the Deputy Inspector General of the South Kashmir Range Atul Goyal. Goyal had spent several years of his NIA career before returning to the JKP box. The team quietly worked on the operation for several months. Speaking about it, Inspector General Vijay Kumar said: “For six months, we collected intelligence on Naikoo. The forces detained dozens of their hiding places in the Valley. We had teams that worked day and night and slept just 2-3 hours per night. Day day.”
A small team of security forces was first dispatched to the village of Beighpora in Awantipora, which was joined by an additional CRPF force.
“On the first day, we were unable to find anything in the village of Beighpora; however, we continued to cordon off the area in conjunction with the search operation. The next day, the terrorists who were hiding in the village opened fire on the forces, leading to retaliation by the forces, “said the police.
Security forces managed to locate Naikoo in the area. At least six bases of Commander Hizb-ul Mujahideen were arrested, after which he was caught by security forces on the seventh. However, the Jammu and Kashmir police dismissed media reports that the police discovered that Naikoo was hiding inside a tunnel during the operation.
According to IG Vijay Kumar, Naikoo used to release videos intended to incite young people. “It had a special power to influence young people and involve them in terrorist activities,” he said.
In the past four months, security forces have carried out at least 27 counterterrorism operations, killing 64 terrorists so far. This includes Qari Yasir from Jaish-e-Mohammad, Burhan Koka from Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind and Riyaz Naikoo in the latter.
In revealing the numbers, police said they have arrested 25 active terrorists and 125 surface workers and their close associates in recent times. Forces said the murder of Commander Lashkar Haider in Handwara last week was a great success. They said that Haider was the backbone of Lashkar-e-Toiba in northern Kashmir.
