NEW DELHI: More than 2.5 lakh passengers have traveled on 222 special trains for stranded migrant workers due to the ongoing blockade announced to contain the spread of Covid-19 in the country, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MHA) said on Friday.
Addressing a press conference, MHA Joint Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava said the government intends to relax people within the blocking guidelines.
These trains are part of this effort, he said.

Giving details of steps taken by the government to alleviate the problems of stranded Indians abroad, he said the process to bring them back in stages began Thursday using unscheduled commercial flights and naval ships.
An Interministerial Coordination Committee made up of officials from the Ministries of Health, Foreign Affairs and Home Affairs, Civil Aviation and Armed forces and Air India has been formed to implement SOPs for the evacuation of stranded people to and from India, he said.
“All the stranded Indians can register in the respective missions … Travellers It will be examined before taking the flight and only asymptomatic travelers will be allowed, “he said, citing the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) that include the trips of stranded Indians abroad.
They will have to commit that after their arrival they will be in mandatory institutional quarantine for 14 days on their own, he said.
Evacuees will have to register with the Arogya Setu app and undergo mandatory medical tests for COVID-19 upon arrival, he said.
