A fight broke out between protesters, including workers and police from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Madurai on Friday during a riot against the state government’s decision to open liquor stores amid the shutdown.

The women were leading the protest and some joined the protest with their children.

On Monday, the Tamil Nadu government had announced the opening of TASMAC (state liquor stores) outlets in all areas except the containment areas.

DMK and its allies issued a joint statement on May 6, announcing that they will use black as a symbol of protest and will raise slogans against state and central governments “for their failure to manage the Covid-19 situation.”
