As many as 16 migrant workers died after being crushed by a freight train at the Aurangabad Karmad in Maharashtra on Friday (May 8, 2020). Some others were seriously injured and two escaped unharmed, all the workers are from Madhya Pradesh.

The accident took place near the Karmad railway station between Jalna and Aurangabad of the Nanded Division of South Central Railways. They were sleeping on the train track when the tragedy occurred.

The statements add that the company’s supervisors in Jalna reported that the workers left at 7pm on Thursday on foot and walked to Badnapore, then began walking on the tracks to Aurangabad. After walking about 36 kms, they got tired and sat on the track and gradually fell asleep.

Fourteen of them were on the railroad track, two members adjacent to the track and three members away from the track. The wounded have been transferred to the government hospital. Local police and Aurangabad GRP are on site.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Prime Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan mourned the loss of life in Aurangabad and announced Rs 56 lakh ex gratia to the relatives of the deceased. He also announced that a special team will visit Aurangabad and help the wounded.
