Andhra Pradesh DGP Damodar Goutam Sawang said Thursday (May 7) that the Visakhapatnam gas leak incident, which claimed the lives of 8 people and left more than 1,000 hospitalized, is an accident. DGP Sawang added that all safety protocols were followed at the LG Polymers-owned chemical plant and a probe was launched to find the reason behind this tragedy. He also informed the media that forensic teams are also being dispatched to the RR Venkatapuram village where the chemical plant is located.

“Right now, the gas has been neutralized. One of the antidotes is drinking a lot of water. About 800 were taken to the hospital, many were released. An investigation will be carried out to see how this happened,” said DGP Sawang. .

On Thursday Andhra Pradesh Industry Minister MG Reddy said the shutdown procedure began immediately after the gas leak at the plant. “After gas leaks were reported at the factory, the shutdown procedure was initiated immediately. The local administrator was informed. The gas was neutralized to a harmless liquid form. But, little gas escaped from the factory premises. and it affected people in nearby areas, “he said.

Reddy said the company that runs the operations at the chemical plant will have to take responsibility for the incident and the government will seek an explanation from them. “The company that manages this has to be responsible for the #VizagGasLeak accident. They will have to come and explain exactly what protocols were followed and what was not followed. Consequently, criminal measures will be taken against them,” he added.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Prime Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy went to Visakhapatnam to inquire about the incident. According to the Office of the Chief Minister, CM Reddy has directed district officials to take all possible measures to save lives and control the situation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also called a meeting of officials from the National Disaster Management Authority at his residence at 11 a.m. to hold talks about the incident that left more than 100 in critical condition. Union Interior Minister Amit Shah and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also attended the meeting.
