NEW DELHI: The indian railways has kept 5,231 coaches ready to be used as Covid service centers across the country to meet demand as infection cases increased significantly in recent days. These trainers can be deployed in 23 states across the country and in major cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Nagpur, Pune, and Lucknow.
The national carrier will provide health services at 85 stations. At 130 other stations, states can request Covid care trainers only if they agree to provide essential medications and personnel. The railways have deployed more than 2,500 doctors and 35,000 paramedical personnel to meet the COVID-19 challenge.
“Trainers can be used for very mild cases that can be clinically assigned to Covid care centers according to guidelines issued by the ministry of health. These coaches can be used in areas where the state has depleted facilities and needs to increase capacities for the isolation of suspected and confirmed Covid cases, “said a spokesman for the rail ministry.
The Health Ministry said Wednesday that train trainers will become Covid call centers and park at 215 stations as part of preparing for a sudden outbreak in cases.

According to the ministry, 158 stations are ready with irrigation and loading facilities and the remaining 57 stations are ready with irrigation facilities for these centers. The 23 states where these coaches can park and be used for Covid care include Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal.
While a maximum of 26 stations have been identified in UP where these coaches can be deployed, Maharashtra has 21 such stations, followed by 19 in Rajasthan and 18 in West Bengal. Bihar has 16 such stations, followed by 15 in MP and 14 in MP.
Ministry officials said that according to guidelines from the health ministry, state governments would send the request to the railways.
“The railroads will assign these coaches to the state or UTs. After the rail assignment, the train will be placed, at the required station with the necessary infrastructure, and delivered to the district collector or magistrate or his authorized person, “the official said.
The railways will provide items on each coach, including oxygen cylinders, and will take care of their maintenance. Catering arrangements will be made by IRCTC and the Railway police force (RPF) will take care of the security aspect.
