The Ministry of Human Resources is deliberating on whether or not to take the pending 12th class board exams for students in CBSE schools abroad and is speaking with foreign ambassadors or ministers of education to come up with a reasonable solution in view of the COVID-19 situation in their respective countries.
The Ministry is also developing a plan for evaluation modalities in places where the practical situation does not allow examinations. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced last month that it will not take pending exams in foreign countries.
However, various representations and questions have been received from students concerned about their future prospects, including admissions to foreign universities.
According to officials, the minister of human resources, Ramesh Pokhriyal “Nishank”, has requested comments from representatives of different countries on the current situation there and the feasibility of conducting pending reviews.
“Considering the different situation in different places, having a common solution is practically not feasible. However, if the situation has improved in some countries, it would be better to conduct examinations at least there. For example, we have a school in Japan, if the situation is better in that particular area, the examination can be carried out, “a senior official from the Ministry of Human Resources told PTI.
“Modalities are being developed for both situations. That if the exams can be done in some places, how they will be done and, if not, what will be the evaluation pattern. We will soon have a final decision on all these aspects, “added the official.
The human resources minister also shared information about it in an online interaction with students on Tuesday.
“We are arguing with CBSE and trying to find a solution. We will also talk to Indian ambassadors in different countries and foreign education ministers. It is a difficult situation since the closure restrictions as well as the situation of COVID-19 are different in different countries and all this must be considered. We will find a solution in the best interest of the students, ”said Nishank.
The DRH ministry is likely to make an announcement about the board’s pending exam schedule this week and a final decision will also be announced for students in foreign schools.
There are more than 210 CBSE-affiliated schools in 25 countries around the world. This year, a total of 23,844 foreign student students took the class 10 exams, while 16,103 students had signed up for the class 12 exams.
“There are several CBSE schools located in 25 countries. Each of these countries is also under closure and they have decided to close schools for different and differential time periods. In such circumstances, it is considered that the board will not be in a position to carry out a differential set of examinations for each of these countries. Also, in the current situation, it will be difficult to bring the answer books to India for evaluation purposes, ”the board had said in a statement last month.
“Therefore, the Board decided not to conduct further examinations for students in class 10 and 12 schools located outside of India. The marking or evaluation system with the purpose of declaring results will be prepared by the board shortly and informed to these schools, ”he added.
According to Johns Hopkins University, more than 3.6 million cases of the new coronavirus have been recorded, including at least 257,000 deaths worldwide.
