Already the worst affected by the coronavirus pandemic, Maharashtra reported 1,233 positive cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday, the highest in a single day, bringing the state’s count to 16,758. It also recorded 34 deaths on Wednesday, bringing the number to 651.
Mumbai, the most affected city in the country, crossed the 10,000 mark with a one-day jump of 769 Covid-19 infections. The total number of registered cases in the city is 10,714.
Mumbai took 57 days to reach 10,000 cases. The city accounts for 63.93 percent of the state’s total infections and 19.20 percent of the national bill. The state government is focusing on strengthening the medical infrastructure in view of a likely increase in the number of cases. According to a central government projection (with a 10-day doubling rate), Mumbai could see around 29,000 cases in mid-May.
The Mumbai Civic Corps, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), has projected 75,000 cases by the end of May.
Up to 33 people tested positive for coronavirus in the Nashik district of Maharashtra, 30 of them in Malegaon, on Wednesday, health officials said. The number of Covid-19 patients in the district reached 503, including 413 from Malegaon and 22 from the city of Nashik.
Malegaon in the district has become one of the hot spots of the coronavirus pandemic in the state.
Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray interacted with central government agencies, including the Indian Army, the Navy, the Railways and the Mumbai Port Trust about the availability of hospitals in Mumbai, Pune and other cities “as part of the preparation”.
Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan also expressed concern, as 34 of Maharashtra’s 36 districts have Covid-19 cases. He also spoke to Thackeray and secured all help to keep the number of cases under control.
So far, Maharashtra has tested 1,90,879 samples, of which 1.73,838 have been negative. State health minister Rajesh Tope said they are analyzing around 8,000 to 10,000 samples every day.
