A day after a video appeared showing how the bodies of Covid-19 victims at Lokmanya Tilak General Hospital, also known as Sion Hospital, were left in a room for an extended period alongside patients, the Municipal Corporation de Brihanmumbai (BMC) ordered an investigation into the matter A committee of the same has been asked to submit its report within 24 hours.
On Wednesday night, MLA Nitish Rane posted the video claiming that patients at Sion Hospital shared the room with the corpses.
The incident has once again highlighted the informal way in which municipal hospitals handle the bodies of Covid-19 patients, despite instructions to be removed from the room within 30 minutes of being declared dead.
The video shows Covid-19 patients undergoing treatment in a room with corpses wrapped in black plastic covers lying near them. This violates the rules of the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) which states that deceased patients must be wrapped in airtight bags to avoid possible transmission of the Sars-CoV-2 virus.
“I have never seen such a horrible situation [in Mumbai] where patients are forced to share beds next to bodies. This causes severe psychological trauma among patients, “said BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, who filed a complaint with the ICMR.
The hospital said that relatives of patients often do not come to claim bodies. Sometimes it takes longer to wrap the body and send it to the morgue.
“Being a non-Covid hospital, we have to serve both Covid and non-Covid patients. This is a severe workload for us as we are working with 60% of staff. It is not always possible to move a body in 30 minutes. In addition, family members often ask us to wait for them before wrapping the body, “said a senior hospital official.
The dean of the Sion hospital, Pramod Ingale, said the relatives of those killed by Covid-19 were also reluctant to take the bodies. “We have removed the bodies and will investigate the matter. We have instructions that the families of the deceased must claim the bodies within 30 minutes, “he said.
The BMC also formed a team to investigate the matter and file a report within 24 hours.
According to a letter issued to the hospital on May 7, the team was instructed to find the person who filmed the video and to analyze the reason for the delay in moving the bodies to the morgue.
