Mumbai So far, 531 Maharashtra police personnel, including 51 officers, have tested positive for COVID-19 so far, an official said Thursday.

Among these infected police personnel, 480 are police officers, who are being treated at various state hospitals, the official said.

Of the 531 coronavirus-positive police staff members, 39, including eight officers, have recovered from the disease, he said.

So far, five police officers have died from the virus, the official said.

Earlier in the day, Interior Minister Anil Deshmukh said 487 police officers have tested positive for COVID-19 in the state since the national blockade took effect.

The blockade was imposed on March 24 and extended until May 17 to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Deshmukh told Twitter that “487 police personnel have tested positive for COVID-19 since the closure.”

Meanwhile, the official said Maharashtra police have recorded at least 96,231 crimes so far under section 188 of the IPC for violation of the blockade-related rules and arrested 18,858 people.

Section 188 of the IPC deals with disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant.

Since the shutdown, there have been 189 police assault incidents (as of May 7) in which 73 staff members and a domestic guard were injured, the official said, adding that at least 683 people had been arrested for these attacks.

About 30 health professionals were also attacked during this period, the official said.

Police have tracked at least 649 people, who violated quarantine rules in the state, excluding the financial capital, the official said.

At least 85,309 phone calls were answered by various police control rooms across the state regarding the virus, he said.

Police recorded 1,281 crimes of illegal transportation and confiscated 53,330 vehicles that had entered the roads in violation of the closing regulations, the official said.

Police have charged a fine of Rs 3.56 crore to offenders for various crimes during this period, he said.

Previously, in a series of tweets, Deshmukh said that 3,10,694 passes have been issued for essential service providers and those caught in emergencies so far.

The minister said 2.24,219 people have been isolated in the state for possible exposure to the coronavirus and 649 violated quarantine regulations.

“The state government is running 4,738 aid camps where 4,35,030 migrant workers have been sheltered with food and necessities. 1,281 crimes have been reported for illegal transportation,” he said on the microblogging site.
