The Border Security Force (BSF) said on Thursday that two of its personnel had succumbed to the coronavirus disease, while a jawan from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) deployed at Mumbai airport died, even when the total number of Covid-19 cases in the central paramilitary forces reached nearly 500.
These were the first victims due to the pandemic in the border surveillance force, BSF and CISF, which monitors several airports and the Delhi metro. Both BSF staff died this week in Delhi.
While the BSF reported 41 new cases on Thursday, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) reported 21 new infections, CISF 10 and Sashastra Seema Bal five.
As of Wednesday, the Covid-19 case count in paramilitary forces was around 400, according to government data.
BSF spokesman Shubhendu Bhardwaj said in a statement that the first jawan was a serious patient and died after contracting the infection while in a super-specialized hospital for treatment. The second jawan died at Safdarjung Hospital on May 4. Her Covid-19 test was performed after her death, before the post mortem examination. The result confirming the infection came only on Wednesday.
The new 41 new BSF infections have brought the Covid-19 figure from strength to 193 across the country.
“Prahari pariwar (the BSF family) is saddened by the deaths of two people during this pandemic,” a BSF statement said.
In defiance of the challenges of securing borders, working with civil administration and taking on other essential responsibilities, 41 new positive cases of Covid-19 have been reported since yesterday. Most of these BSF personnel have been assisting civil police in tasks during this critical phase of the Covid-19 pandemic, ”he added.
