Jaipur Targets ‘Super Spreaders’ to Contain Covid-19 Infections

Rajasthan has now turned its attention to “super spreaders” to contain Covid-19 infections in Jaipur, a senior government official said Thursday.

According to government data, of the 33 districts of Rajasthan, Jaipur has a maximum of 1,099 cases of Covid-19. To date around 30,761 samples have been taken in Jaipur and 52 of the Covid-19 patients in the district have died.

After recently finding more than 10 positive cases of super spreaders (fruit and vegetable vendors) in the city, the district administration has begun to aggressively sample randomly.

“Our main focus now is on super spreaders, such as vegetable vendors, dairy stalls, supermarkets, and drug stores. These are the direct points of interaction. There have been many incidents in the past few days where the vegetable vendor had spread the infection, ”said Ajitabh Sharma, Chief Secretary, Department of Energy and Jaipur Nodal Officer.

Tracking contacts is difficult in such cases because providers are mobile, he added.

“An aggressive random sampling was started to verify the super spreaders, with the vegetable vendors being the first to be verified, since they are mobile. Subsequently, we will cover dairy stalls, supermarkets and medical stores that are stationary, ”Sharma said.

He said there has been an unprecedented increase in the number of fruit and vegetable vendors after many people who were in other stores also started selling fruits and vegetables.

The official said there is an increased risk of infection as a large number of people contact providers who do not have fixed routes and make it difficult to trace contacts if a positive case is found between them. More than 150 first super spreader contacts have been quarantined. Management has devised a way to monitor vendors.

“In view of this, the number of vendors has been limited for each neighborhood and they have to wear caps issued by the Municipal Corporation, wear masks and carry disinfectant,” he said.

“The number of vendors has also been limited across the city to 10 in each neighborhood. To distinguish them, caps of different colors have been given to vendors allowed in the inner and outer walled city. Out of around 3,000 sellers, 1,050 can now sell. Those who sell inside the walled city will wear a multi-colored cap and those who are outside will wear white, ”he said.

A separate team of doctors is testing and monitoring them.

Health and Medical Director Narrottam Sharma said about 1,200 samples have been taken to date from super spreaders, such as vegetable vendors and grocery store people, and a dozen of them have tested positive.

Amid the growing number of cases, the “positive” news is that of the total of 1,099 Covid-19 cases in Jaipur, 604 have been recovered and 461 have been discharged. The number of active cases is now 443.
