Maharashtra’s Covid-19 numbers surpass 18,000, infection spreads to Arthur Road jail

Maharashtra registered 1,362 new cases of Covid-19 on Thursday, bringing the state’s count to 18,120, state health minister Rajesh Tope said.

To reduce the risks of further infections due to overcrowding, the government also decided to forgo medical certificates for migrant workers heading home.

“We have decided that migrant workers who want to go to their places of origin do not need to obtain medical certificates from now on. Only a thermal check will be performed. This decision was made to avoid long queues outside the doctors’ clinics, “Tope said according to ANI.

An official with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said 50 new cases of Covid-19 were reported by Dharavi, who emerged as an access point. New cases have brought Dharavi’s count to 783.

As the pandemic continued to spread in Mumbai with 72 inmates and 7 staff members at the Arthur Road High Security Prison, the tests tested positive for Covid-19. All positive inmates will be transferred to GT Hospital and Saint George Hospital on Friday morning, while staff members will be transferred separately, Maharashtra prison authorities said.

The state government has converted the CIDCO Exhibition Center at Vashi in Navi Mumbai into isolation rooms for Covid-19.

Earlier on Thursday, Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh said that so far some 250 city police officers have tested positive for the virus.

The Maharashtra Police Department has registered 531 Covid-19 cases, including the 250 cases of the Mumbai Police. Thirty-nine have recovered, while five have died from the infection. Three of the victims were from the Mumbai police.

The Mumbai police chief visited the Sir JJ Marg police station, which has the highest number of Covid-19 cases in the city with 27 police officers testing positive.

Other police stations such as Dharavi, Wadala and Vakola are among the worst affected police stations at 94 police stations in the city.
