The officials concerned took a few hours to monitor the situation.

Bangalore:

A quarantine team of health workers and police officers were allegedly attacked last night in west Bengaluru by a large crowd of around 200 locals when officials arrived in a neighborhood to carry 58 people believed to have come into contact with three patients with coronavirus. They were forced to withdraw, leaving behind the 33 premises that had to be taken to the isolation units.

At least 54 people have been arrested so far after the incident drew widespread criticism. While police denied reports of an attack on the team, a first information report or FIR was released that mentions the charges of assault and attempted murder.

A neighborhood in the town of Padarayanapura in West Bengaluru was sealed last week after three people, who had attended a congregation in Delhi’s Nizammudin in March, tested positive for coronavirus. The Tablighi Jamaat-held congregation has created the largest group of COVID-19 cases in India; So far, more than 4,000 cases across the country have been linked to the congregation.

When the team arrived in the neighborhood around 7 p.m., angry locals began removing the tin blades that were erected as barricades to mark the sealed area.

In the videos recorded on mobile phones, you can see harmful local residents installed for health workers and police.

Amid reports of attacks on health workers, senior police officer B Ramesh said: “No health worker was attacked … only some property damage has been reported.” Locals demanded on-site testing. Interested officials took a few hours to monitor the situation.

In a tweet, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said: “The police commissioner has been told to provide full security to Asha workers and other officials. Any attack on the Covid warriors will not be tolerated.”

Union Minister Prahlad Joshi also condemned the incident in a tweet.

Karnataka Interior Minister Basavaraj Bommai was quoted by the PTI news agency: “I met with the Prime Minister and briefed him on the incident. He has told us to act strictly. I have told my officials the same thing. No we will tolerate such acts. ” By anyone.”

Former Prime Minister HD Kumaraswamy called the act “reprehensible” in a tweet.

Fifty-four people have been arrested in the case, including those who had to be taken to isolation units. Among those arrested is a woman believed to have instigated the group of locals.

Several attacks have been reported in recent weeks against healthcare workers and those at the forefront of the fight against the coronavirus.

Last week, a group of sanitation workers in Madhya Pradesh was attacked by a crowd of locals in the Dewas district when they went to a neighborhood to clean the streets. In Bihar, four of these cases of attacks on health workers were reported statewide within 24 hours on Thursday.

Across India, over 17,000 cases of COVID-19 have been reported, over 500 people have died.
