Coronavirus: Bengal said kits supplied by ICMR show inconclusive results

Defective kits supplied by the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), the country’s nodal body for COVID-19 testing, have yielded inconclusive results and slowed the pace of testing, the West Bengal government said.
In Sunday tweets, the state Department of Health and Family Welfare urged the ICMR to investigate the problem immediately, as the delays have prompted the need to repeat and confirm tests that are delaying the battle against the pandemic. West Bengal has reported 310 cases of COVID-19 so far and 12 deaths, according to data from the Ministry of Health. Cases have been on the rise in the past three days.
While awaiting a response from ICMR, the director of the Council’s nodal body in Kolkata said the matter was being seriously addressed.
“It is unfortunate that the kits are not standardized to give exact results. It is difficult for each of the medical universities to standardize the kits, therefore they are showing different and inconclusive results,” said Dr. Shanta Dutta, Director of the National Institute . cholera and enteric diseases (NICED) in Kolkata.
Initially, he said, the kits were being assembled and standardized at the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune. As demand increased, the ICMR began importing ready-made kits and shipping them to 26 warehouses for later delivery to laboratories under its jurisdiction throughout the country.
NICED is one of those warehouse and supply kits for Odisha and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, as well as West Bengal.

The tweets have been fueled by a reference to “mischievous reports on social media about the alleged delay in time to analyze swab samples” in the state.
Last week, in a series of media interviews, the Director of NICED questioned the low test rate for COVID-19 in West Bengal and denied that the shortage of kits was responsible for it.
Dr. Dutta also questioned the decrease in the number of swab samples that NICED had been receiving from the state government. In the week ending April 12, he said his laboratory was obtaining a maximum of 20 samples per day, when its analysis capacity was 80-90 samples.
His comments had created quite a stir in West Bengal and beyond because the state was indeed at the bottom of the list when it came to test numbers per million.
The West Bengal government will begin rapid antibody and group tests to detect patients with COVID-19, the state government said in a statement on Sunday. Mass tests for coronavirus can be done inexpensively by group testing, by conducting group tests of five people as a survey, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said. Massive testing has grown in importance as the number of coronavirus positives in the country crosses the 16,000 mark.
