Since the Coronavirus pandemic does not subside, the BCCI has officially suspended the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League indefinitely. This occurs just two days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech to the nation, announcing the extension of the closing period until May 3.
“The health and safety of the nation and everyone involved in our great sport remains our top priority and as such, BCCI along with franchise owners, the broadcaster, sponsors and all interested parties recognize that the IPL 2020 season will only begin when it is safe and appropriate to do so, “a BCCI statement said.
Originally, the tournament was scheduled to start on March 29 in Wankhede, with the finalists of the 2019 edition, the Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings pitted against each other. Due to the national blockade, there was speculation about making the IPL a closed-door event (to play in empty and televised stadiums), before the start date was officially postponed to April 15.
Most of the cricket calendar worldwide has been closed due to the ongoing pandemic. All international cricket has been suspended or canceled. England has delayed the start of their season until at least May 28 and several signings abroad have been canceled. BCCI was forced to cancel the series against South Africa in March, and the situation has only worsened since then.
