Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami revealed on Wednesday that he played throughout the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand with a fractured knee.
Shami was the second-best wicket player in India behind Umesh Yadav and the fourth-best overall in the tournament, but it turns out that he battled pain every day to appear in the main event.
Shami accumulated 17 wickets in 7 games at an average of 17.29 with best figures of 4 by 35 and was only behind Umesh Yadav, who played one game more than him and collected 18 wickets in 17.83 with 2 sets of four wicket.
Speaking about her World Cup performances, Shami revealed that doctors used to draw fluid from her knees every day before going out on the field.
“I had a knee injury during the 2015 World Cup. I was unable to walk after the games I played throughout the tournament with the injury. I played WC 2015 due to Nitin Patel’s confidence.”
“The knee was broken in the first match. My thighs and knees were the same size, the doctors used to extract liquids every day. I used to take 3 painkillers,” Shami told Irfan Pathan during a candid live conversation on Instagram.
‘Mahi Bhai, the team management gave me confidence’
Shami also credited former captain MS Dhoni for motivating him to keep playing despite the pain throughout the tournament and especially in the semifinal at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
“Before the semifinal I had told my teammates that I couldn’t take it any longer. On game day, I was in a lot of pain. I discussed it with management but they said it would be fine.”
“Mahi bhai, the team management gave me so much confidence. They said it is the semifinal that we cannot go for a new bowler.”
“I threw the first 5 overs and gave away about 13 runs with a wicket. I beat Finch and Warner’s bats but I couldn’t take advantage. So I left after telling Mahi Bhai.”
“The condition was very bad even after I injected myself. I told Mahi Bhai that I can’t bowling because I can’t run anymore. But he said I trust you, any other half-time he will go running as well.”
“He just told me not to give away more than 60 runs. I haven’t played in a worse condition than that. A 4mm piece had broken the bone. Some said my career was over, others said I shouldn’t have played.” But Touchwood is still here in front of all of you, “Shami said.
India was eliminated from the 2015 World Cup after they lost to eventual champions Australia in the second semi-final in Sydney. The Australians were 328 for 7 thanks to Steve Smith’s 105 and then defeated India 233 thanks to the brilliant performances of pacemakers James Faulkner (3/59), Mitchell Starc (2/28) and Mitchell Johnson (2/50). .
