The Union Ministry of Health and Family Assistance said Wednesday that 32 people have died and 773 have tested positive for the new coronavirus in India since Tuesday, bringing the number of deaths from COVID-19 to 149 and cases to 5,194. until now.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the country faces a “social emergency” situation, as well as serious economic challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

After an interaction with Modi via video conference, several political leaders said the blockade may not be fully lifted after April 14.

“Prime Minister Modi made it clear that the blockade is not being lifted and also that the life before the crown and after the crown will not be the same,” said Biju Janata Dal leader Pinaki Misra. PTI.

Maharashtra continues to lead among states

New cases were reported from Maharashtra (including in the densely populated Dharavi slums of Mumbai), Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Jammu and Kashmir, among other places.

Ladakh Lok Sabha member Jamyang Tsering Namgyal said the spread of the virus has been successfully contained in the Union Territory, while the Sikkim government said so far not a single case has been detected in the state .

The largest number of confirmed cases in the country are from Maharashtra with 1,018, followed by Tamil Nadu with 690 and Delhi with 576 cases.

Telangana has reported 364 cases of COVID-19 followed by Kerala in 336. Rajasthan has 328 cases, Uttar Pradesh has 326, and Andhra Pradesh reported 305 cases of coronavirus. New cases of coronavirus have increased to 229 in Madhya Pradesh, 175 in Karnataka and 165 in Gujarat.

Haryana has 147 cases, Jammu and Kashmir has 116, West Bengal has 99, and Punjab has 91 positive patients so far. Odisha has reported 42 cases of coronavirus.

Sixteen deaths were reported from Maharashtra, two from Delhi, West Bengal, Haryana and Tamil Nadu and one from Andhra Pradesh.

Altogether, Maharashtra has reported the highest number of coronavirus deaths at 64 years, followed by Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh with 13 each and Delhi with 9. Telengana, Punjab and Tamil Nadu have reported seven deaths each.

Modi interacts with opposition leaders, other parties

Interacting with Opposition floor leaders and other parties through a video conference, Modi said states, district administrations and experts have suggested extending the ongoing blockade beyond April 14 to contain the spread of the virus.

Modi told leaders that the country faces “serious economic challenges as a result of COVID-19, and the government is committed to overcoming them.”

After the meeting, the leader of the Congress, Ghulam Nabi Azad, said that around 80 percent of the political parties suggested the extension of the blockade.

The prime minister told leaders that he is receiving requests to extend the blockade and that he will speak to chief ministers and experts before making a decision in the best interest of the nation, Azad said.

Modi plans to interact with all the main ministers on April 11.

Uttarakhand and Goa teamed up with several other states to favor the extension of the blockade, while the Punjab government said it will take a call on April 10 about whether to extend the ongoing curfew in the state beyond April 14.

Karnataka Prime Minister BS Yediyurappa said PTI that his government is in favor of lifting the blockade in districts that have remained free of infection, subject to approval by the Center.

He also said the state intends to relax liquor sales, suspended since the 21-day shutdown was imposed to contain the spread of COVID-19, after April 14, in a bid to boost state revenue.

Doctors and health professionals are “warriors” in the fight against coronavirus and must be protected, the Supreme Court said Wednesday, even when the Center said it is doing its best to provide them with personal protective equipment (PPE) and other facilities.
