Irrfan Khan’s son Babil fondly remembered him with rare black and white photographs of his days at the National Drama School (NSD) in the late 1980s. In the first image, the actor is seen with large Round-rimmed glasses while lighting a cigarette. The second and third snapshots are of him on stage, mid-performance.
“NSD,” Babil wrote in his legend. The post has garnered thousands of likes on Instagram, and fans have paid their tributes in the comment section. “Legend for ever and ever,” wrote one user. “He lost the jewel of the cinema,” wrote another. Several also left heart emojis in the post.
Irrfan died on Wednesday (April 29) at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital after a two-year battle with a neuroendocrine tumor. He was buried in the Versova kabrastaan in the presence of close friends and family.
The NSD condemned Irrfan’s disappearance and said in a statement: “Not only has the National Drama School lost one of its deserving members, Irrfan’s disappearance is a great loss to the Indian arts and film fraternity.”

On Saturday (May 2), Irrfan’s wife Sutapa Sikdar released a statement on behalf of her two children, Babil and Ayaan, and herself, sharing details of their battle with cancer. How can I write this as a family statement when the whole world takes it as a personal loss? How can I begin to feel lonely when millions are grieving with us right now? I want to assure everyone that this is not a loss, it is a gain. It is a gain from the things it taught us, and now we will finally begin to really implement it and evolve, “the statement said.
“Curiously, our lives were a master class in acting, so when the dramatic entrance of the ‘uninvited guests’ happened, then I knew there was a harmony in the cacophony. The doctor’s reports were like scripts he wanted to perfect, for which I never miss any detail that he looked for in his performance, “he added.
