NEW DELHI: Rahul Gandhi attacked the government on Saturday over the “privacy concerns” of the Aarogya Setu app, evoking a strong response from Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, who said the congressional leader told a “new lie” to daily.
The BJP lead leader said the app is a “powerful companion” that protects people in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Rahul Gandhi had previously alleged that the Aarogya Setu app is a “sophisticated surveillance system” outsourced to a private operator, raising serious data security and privacy concerns in India.
While responding to the allegations, Prasad said the app has a “robust data security” architecture.
Investigating the leader and the congressional party, Prasad added that those “who devoted themselves to surveillance throughout their lives will not know how technology can be harnessed forever.”
“Every day, a new lie. Aarogya Setu is a powerful companion who protects people. He has a strong data security architecture. Those who have dedicated themselves to surveillance all their lives will not know how technology can be harnessed forever ! ” Prasad said in a tweet.
Clarifying that the app is not outsourced to any private operator, Prasad asked Rahul Gandhi to “stop outsourcing” his tweets to his buddies who don’t understand India.

“Aarogya Setu is now being appreciated globally. The app is NOT outsourced to any private operator. Mr. Gandhi it really is time for him to stop outsourcing his tweets to his buddies who don’t understand India,” added the minister.

The central government said on Saturday that it made it mandatory for all its employees to download the Aarogya setu application and urged private individuals to also ask their employees to use it.
The Union Home Office also said the mobile app will be mandatory for people living in the Covid-19 containment areas.
