Today is International Astronomy Day and people, although locked up, have a clear sky to watch. This year, the month of May has brought with it some amazing stargazing moments, including three eclipses, the last supermoon of the year, and two meteor showers. For sky watchers, this is the perfect opportunity to enjoy your favorite activity. So let’s see how and when we can see all these amazing heavenly events from our rooftops and balconies.
May 5, Eta Aquariid meteor shower: According to NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office, on May 5 you will see a huge meteor show. Although it won’t be as bright, the meteorites in this rain will be fast and weak, so those who see it will have to keep looking at the sky, without blinking, if possible.
May 7, last supermoon of 2020 (Super Flower Moon): The fourth and last supermoon of the year, this is also called Super Flower Moon, it will be seen on May 7. The moon will be brighter than normal on this day. So get ready with all your camera gear as the next supermoon won’t happen long after this day. The next full moon supermoon will take place in April 2021.
May 12, Jupiter and lunar encounter: On the morning of May 12 we will witness a close encounter between the moon and Jupiter. Sky watchers could see this celestial happening from a little after midnight to sunrise from a telescope and binoculars as well.
May 14: meeting between Mars and the Moon: On May 14, people could see the moon approaching Mars, just before sunrise. The moon and Mars will come into close contact and one could also detect this celestial event with the naked eye.
There will be more heavenly events in June and July.
