619 foreigners, most linked to Tablighi Jamaat, detained for visa violations | India News

PRAYAGRAJ: Sixteen foreigners were arrested on Monday night under various sections of the IPC, the Epidemic Diseases Act and the Foreigners Act (for violating visa rules), bringing the total number of foreigners arrested in the country since the outbreak from Covid-19 to minus 619. Except for a few, all those arrested are linked to the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Delhi last month.
Uttar Pradesh tops the list with the arrest of 341 foreigners, followed by 157 in Maharashtra, 66 in Bihar, 34 in Karnataka and 21 in Jharkhand. Three other states have filed FIRs against foreigners, but no arrests have been made. Telangana has booked 88 foreigners, Tamil Nadu 72 and Madhya Pradesh 65.

The 16 foreigners arrested in Prayagraj were taken to the temporary isolation room established in the Naini prison. Along with the foreigners, a professor at the University of Allahabad was also arrested for arranging accommodation for 21 TJ delegates and failing to inform the police and administration about them. The teacher had also attended the congregation in Nizamuddin along with the foreigners.

According to police records, around 85% of the total of 341 foreigners arrested in UP are Bangladeshi. The rest are from Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. Foreigners have been recruited mainly under Section 14 (b) of the Aliens Act of 1946, which does not allow a person visiting India on a tourist visa to participate in other activities.

In Maharashtra, 15 FIRs have been filed against 157 foreigners for violation of the Aliens Act, Police Inspector General Milind Bharambe told TOI. They had all attended the congregation at Nizamuddin in Delhi. They are housed in different prisons across the state.
