Police file first charge sheet in northeast Delhi riots

Delhi police filed a charge sheet against a 23-year-old man, who allegedly shot at police in northeast Delhi during the February riots. Police said this is the first charge sheet to be filed in connection with the riots in Delhi. The defendant, identified as Shahrukh Pathan, was arrested by police on charges of riot and attempted murder on March 3.

In a video, Pathan was seen waving his pistol at police officers on the Jaffrabad-Maujpur highway on February 24. He then shot at the policemen, who tried to arrest him, fleeing the scene. The video went viral on social media as police tried to arrest the man.

One of the bullets had hit Police Chief Deepak Dahiya, police said.

Police said that after the incident, Pathan fled to Punjab with her family. It was spotted on news channels and repeatedly changed its location. He left Punjab after a few days and went to Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh.

Ten Delhi Police Special Cell Teams were formed to arrest him and found him at his friend’s home in Shamli District, UP. The charge sheet was filed in Karkardoom court and is over 350 pages long. Pathan was the first person arrested in connection with the riots.

“After catching Pathan, we discovered that a man named Kaleem Ahmed, a UP resident, helped him escape. We have also arrested him, his name has been added to the charge sheet. We have also caught Pathan’s associate, Ishtiyak Malik, who was on site at the time of the incident. The charge sheet has been filed against all three for riots, ”said Anil Mittal, Additional PRO, Delhi Police.
