After questions were raised about Zoom’s claims to use during the COVID crisis, the company quietly edited a blog post that dramatically reduces the number.
News of the Zoom hoax surfaced in the wake of Microsoft’s earnings on Thursday, when Microsoft chief marketing officer Chris Capossela tweeted who believed that the Zoom numbers were too far away.
“I think the Zoom 300 [million] the figure is not a [daily active users] or [monthly active users] number, but a number of meeting participants, “he tweeted. Microsoft, by comparison, reported that its Teams service saw more than 200 million meeting participants in a single day this month, generating more than 4.1 billion minutes of meetings Microsoft Teams now has more than 75 million daily active users, the company reported.
Capossela is right, and Zoom quietly edited a week-long blog post that claimed it had more than 300 million “users.” Now, the publication notes that Zoom has more than “300 million daily Zoom meeting participants.”
There is a huge Difference between “users” and “participants”, as you can see in the Microsoft figures. Microsoft’s 75 million users resulted in 200 million meeting participants in a single day. Therefore, Zoom’s actual user numbers are probably a third of what they originally claimed.
That is still higher than the Microsoft Teams figure, but not by a factor of four, as before. And if you add using Skype, Microsoft’s video conferencing solutions actually overcome General zoom.
This makes a lot more sense to me: Yes, Zoom is “easy”, but it’s not easier to use than competing solutions like Skype. And given Microsoft’s efforts over the years in this market, Zoom’s alleged dominance is always false to me. And now we know why.
