NEW DELHI: A private hospital in the national capital claimed that a coronavirus patient, who received plasma therapy for the first time at the facility, was released on Sunday after being fully healed.
The 49-year-old man had tested positive for Covid-19 on April 4 and was admitted to Max Hospital, Saket, said in a statement.
As his condition worsened, he received ventilation assistance on April 8, the hospital added.
When the patient showed no signs of improvement, his family asked for plasma therapy for compassionate reasons, he said, adding that the family arranged for a donor to extract plasma.
On the night of April 14, fresh plasma was administered to the patient as a treatment modality as a sideline to standard treatment protocols, according to the statement.
Subsequently, the patient showed improvement and, on the fourth day, the ventilator support was removed and he continued with supplemental oxygen. He was transferred to a 24-hour surveillance room Monday after testing negative twice in 24 hours, he said.
Now he has fully recovered and has been discharged, the hospital said, adding that he will stay home for another two weeks.
The medical director of the Max Healthcare group and the senior director of the Institute of Internal Medicine, Dr. Sandeep Budhiraja, said: “We can say that plasma therapy could have worked as a catalyst to accelerate your recovery. We cannot attribute 100% from recovery to plasma therapy only, as there are multiple factors that marked your path to recovery. ”
