A 57-year-old Mumbai police traffic officer, who was denied admission by four hospitals run by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), despite showing telltale signs of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19), gave positive. The police chief is receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) of King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEM) in Parel.
A senior Mumbai police officer told HT that the police chief, who is linked to the Kurla division of the trafficking branch, had developed a fever earlier this week. His son took him to the Rajawadi Hospital, run by BMC, on Tuesday around 2 p.m., he added.
“My father complained of fever, cough, and shortness of breath earlier this week. On Tuesday, doctors at Rajawadi Hospital checked his temperature, did a preliminary check-up and recommended that he be isolated at home. But when I asked the authorities to admit him to the hospital’s isolation facilities, they refused, as there was no bed available, and instead asked me to take him to the Kasturba Infectious Disease Hospital run by BMC, “the young man of 25. son of the police chief.
The son took his father to the Kasturba Hospital on his motorcycle. “Hospital doctors checked her temperature and gave her oxygen. They also said that no beds are available and asked me to take him to the Nair Hospital run by BMC. “Nair Hospital management gave the same excuse that there was no bed available and they do not screen patients for Covid-19. I took my father to KEM Hospital on his recommendation, but there, too, the doctors initially refused to admit him. Finally, he was admitted to the ICU after I spoke to some police officers, “said the son.
“My father has worked for the state police department for 28 years. If something bad happens to him, the callous doctors will be responsible, “he warned.
Civic authorities are tracking close contacts of the police chief to quarantine them. His family members have already been quarantined, police said.
