NEW DELHI: Students in classes 9 and 11, who failed the exams this year, will have a unique opportunity to perform on school tests and improve their performance in view of the situation of COVID-19, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced.

Last month, the board had announced the promotion of all students up to class 8, regardless of their test performance.

“In light of requests from parents and students, as a one-time measure in an extraordinary situation, the CBSE has decided that all failing students in classes 9 and 11 will have the opportunity to re-appear on a school exam. The opportunity will be will extend to students regardless of whether their exams have been completed and the results announced or not. The facility will extend regardless of the number of subjects and attempts, “said CBSE exam controller Sanyam Bhardwaj.

The board has clarified that the unique opportunity is only expanding in the current year in light of the unprecedented conditions of COVID-19 and the benefit will not extend in the future.

“Schools, by providing remediation to such students, can take online, offline, or innovative tests and can decide on promotion based on the test. The test can be taken in all subjects in which students have failed. Before taking the test, schools will give students enough time to prepare, “said Bhardwaj.

The board reiterated that this exemption will be extended to all students, even if given the opportunity prior to notification.

“This is an unprecedented situation. Children are homebound. Their schools are closed. They are experiencing mental stress and anxiety. Parents are concerned about family wages and health. In this difficult time, children who are not Clear school exams may have been even more annoying.

“In such a difficult time, all of us will have to make joint efforts to relieve students of stress and help them alleviate their anxiety,” said Bhardwaj.

Universities and schools across the country have been closed since March 16, when the Center announced a closure of classrooms across the country as one of the measures to contain the COVID-19 outbreak.

Later, a national blockade was imposed from March 25, which lasted until May 17.

The CBSE has announced that pending board exams for classes 10 and 12 will take place in 29 crucial subjects from July 1 to 15.
