More people in India recovered from the coronavirus than were infected in the past 24 hours, data from the Health Ministry showed this morning. The country, which is the second most affected by the coronavirus pandemic, recorded 93,337 new COVID-19 infections in a 24-hour period, surpassing the 53 lakh mark. The number of people who were cured of the viral disease in the same duration was 95,880 with a recovery rate of 79.28%, which brought India to pole position in terms of recoveries. More than 42 lakh people in the country have recovered from COVID-19 so far. The number of cases in the country currently stands at 53,08,014.
In the past 24 hours, India reported 1,247 virus-related deaths with a death rate of 1.61 percent, bringing the total number of Covid deaths to 85,619. Of this, some 21,150 deaths were reported in September.
With 10,13,964 lakh people currently receiving treatment for COVID-19, the percentage of active cases in India has dropped to 19.10 percent.
However, the country has recorded 16.86,769 new coronavirus cases so far in September. The country’s positivity rate has also increased to 10.58 percent from 7.5 percent in mid-July.
The increase in positivity also comes as the country doubled its tests in the past month to a total of 6.24 crore of tests, with 8.81 lakh of tests performed in the past 24 hours, the Health Ministry said.
Globally, more than 30.2 million people have contracted the coronavirus since its outbreak in China’s Wuhan last year, according to the AFP news agency. North and South America combined still accounted for almost half of the world’s cases.
