New Delhi:
India saw the largest daily increase in Covid cases since mid-September, with 93,249 new infections reported since yesterday, bringing the count to more than 1.24 million cases. Today’s increase is the highest since Sept. 19, when 93,337 infections were recorded. The country also reported 513 virus-related deaths in the past 24 hours, 28 percent less than the 714 deaths reported yesterday.
Eight states account for 81.42 percent of the infections reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health. These eight states are Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Madhya Pradesh.
Sixty percent of daily cases come from Maharashtra alone. The western state, which has increased ninefold in the past two months, reported 49,447 coronavirus cases and 277 deaths on Saturday. Eight of the ten districts with the highest number of coronavirus cases are in Maharashtra.
The state capital, Mumbai, reported more than 9,000 daily cases of coronavirus on Saturday, its highest peak in a single day since the start of the pandemic. It also recorded 27 deaths in the last 24 hours.
The worrying increase in Covid cases has forced the BCCI to keep Hyderabad and Indore as waiting places for the IPL. Axar Patel from Delhi Capitals, 10 ground staff at Wankhede Stadium and six event managers, deployed by BCCI, have contracted the disease.
Meanwhile, Delhi recorded more than 3,500 coronavirus cases for the second day in a row on Saturday. The positivity rate in the national capital has risen to 4.48 percent from 4.11 percent the day before, according to the health department.
