India recorded an average of 87 cases of rape every day in 2019 and 4.05,861 cases of crimes against women during the year, an increase of more than seven percent from 2018, shows the latest data released by the National Bureau of Criminal Records .
The report “Crimes in India -2019” shows that crimes against women increased by 7.3% last year. The crime rate recorded per lakh of women is 62.4 percent in 2019, up from 58.8 percent in 2018.
The country recorded 3,78,236 cases of crimes against women in 2018, the data shows.
In 2018, 33,356 violations were registered throughout the country, compared to 32,559 in 2017, according to data for the corresponding years.
“Most of these cases under the Indian Penal Code were recorded under ‘cruelty by the husband or his relatives’ (30.9%), followed by ‘Assault of women with the intention of outraging their modesty’ (21, 8%), ‘kidnapping and abduction of women’ (17.9 percent), “NCRB data showed for 2019.
Not just women, the figures compiled by NCRB also indicate an upward trend in cases involving crimes against children. Since 2018, crimes against children have increased by 4.5% in 2019.
In 2019, a total of 1.48 lakh cases of crimes against children were registered, of which 46.6% were cases of kidnapping and 35.3% were cases related to sexual crimes.
The NCRB, which reports to the Union Ministry of the Interior, is tasked with collecting and analyzing crime data from across the country. The agency has compiled the three-volume report after collecting data from 36 states and UT and 53 metropolitan cities.
Once again, the Interior Ministry clearly said that West Bengal has not shared the most recent data, which is why the 2018 data has been used to arrive at national and municipal figures.
The Union Secretary of the Interior Ajay Bhalla thanked all the states and UT that carried out the gigantic exercise to collect data during the coronavirus outbreak.
