Chennai:
Seven people were killed in an explosion at a fireworks factory in Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore, 190 km from the state capital, Chennai. Four others suffered serious injuries. The factory owner was also killed in the blast, police said.
The footage shows shocked people crying near the rubble of a concrete structure that collapsed in the blast. You could see bodies lying around. A crowd has also gathered at the crash site.
“It is a licensed unit near Kattumannarkoil. They were all workers. They are investigating whether they were making domestically made bombs and whether they were only using permitted explosives,” Cuddalore Police Superintendent Sree Abhinav told NDTV.
The industrial accident occurred at a time when the state government allowed industries to resume work with 100 percent of the workforce amid the coronavirus crisis.
The fireworks industry missed its peak manufacturing season ahead of Diwali due to the coronavirus lockdown.
The fireworks capital of India, Sivakasi, is also located in Tamil Nadu.
