NEW DELHI: Seven Indians, who were kidnapped in Libya last month, they have been released, the ministry of foreign affairs he said on Monday. Indian citizens, coming from Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, were kidnapped in Asshwerif on September 14 when they were heading to Tripoli airport to catch a flight to India.
“We are pleased to report that the seven Indian nationals who had been abducted from Asshwerif in Libya on September 14 were finally released yesterday,” the MEA said.
Last week, MEA spokesperson Anurag Srivastava He said the Indians were working in a construction and supply company for oil fields.
“Our ambassador to Tunisia, Puneet Roy Kundal, spoke with them by phone after the kidnappers handed them over to the Al Shola Al Mudia company. They are all in good health and are currently staying at the company’s premises in Brega. complete the necessary paperwork to allow his return to India, “said the MEA.
Following the kidnapping, the Indian embassy in Tunisia approached the Libyan government authorities and also the international organizations present there, seeking help in rescuing the Indian citizens.
The Indian mission in Tunisia deals with matters related to the welfare of Indian citizens in Libya.
Libya, an oil-rich country in North Africa, has witnessed large-scale violence and unrest since the fall of Muammar Gaddafifour-decade regimen in 2011.
“We convey our sincere appreciation to the Libyan authorities and tribal elders in the region for their steadfast cooperation in ensuring the release of our citizens unharmed,” the MEA said.
He also reiterated that since May 2016 travel of Indian nationals to Libya, regardless of the reason, has been prohibited due to the security situation there.
In September 2015, the government issued a warning for Indian citizens to avoid traveling to Libya due to the security situation there.
In May 2016, the government imposed a total travel ban regardless of purpose in view of the deteriorating security situation in Libya.
