Jay Kishore Pradhan of Odisha broke with the NEET earlier this year and signed up as an MBBS freshman like thousands of other applicants from the state, only he’s 64 and a retired banker.
Pradhan, whose timeless feat is described as a rare event in the history of Indian medical education, says he wants to serve the people as long as he lives.
A former SBI official, he entered the state-run Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology in the disability reserve category on Wednesday.
“It is one of the rare events in the history of medical education in the country. Pradhan has set an example by being admitted as a medical student at that age, ”said VIMSAR Director Lalit Meher.
Pradhan appeared for the National Cum Entry Eligibility Test (NEET), which does not have an upper age limit, in September, got a good rank and qualified for VIMSAR.
The recent death of one of his twin daughters prompted him to apply for NEET and enroll in the MBBS course to become a doctor, the Bargarh resident said.
Pradhan, who will likely be 70 when he finishes his MBBS course, said age is just a number for him too. “I have no commercial intentions in the future. I want to serve the people until I’m alive. ”
