Sambhal (ABOVE):
The Sambhal district administration in Uttar Pradesh has issued notices to six farmer leaders asking them to present personal vouchers of Rs 50,000 each, as a police report warned of the breakdown of peace during the protest against the new agricultural laws, said a official on Thursday.
The six farmers, who received notices, include Bharatiya Kisan Union (Asli) district president Rajpal Singh Yadav, and agricultural leaders Jaiveer Singh, Brahmachari Yadav, Satendra Yadav, Raudas and Veer Singh. They have been organizing protests in the district over the Center’s three controversial farm laws.
“We have a report from the Hayatnagar police station that some people are inciting farmers and there may be a break in the peace, and they should be asked to fill out personal bonds of Rs 50 lakh each,” said the subdivisional magistrate. Deependra Yadav.
The farmers said the amount was too much, after which the police station in charge gave another report and were asked to provide personal bonds of Rs 50,000 each, according to Mr. Yadav.
The notifications were issued under Section 111 (court order against anyone who may violate the peace) of the Code of Criminal Procedure on the basis of a report submitted by the police, the official said.
“We will not fill the bonds no matter what,” said BKU (Asli) leader Rajpal Singh Yadav. “They can hang us or send us to jail. We are fighting for farmers’ rights.”
The president of the BKU (Asli) division, Sanjeev Gandhi, said that neither of them nor their relatives had signed the bonds.
“We are doing peaceful protests, not any crime,” he added.
