Muzaffarnagar:

Six migrant workers were hit by a Uttar Pradesh government bus on a highway in the Muzaffarnagar state district, police said this morning. Two workers were injured.

The workers had been walking to their hometown Gopalganj in Bihar from Punjab amid the coronavirus blockade.

Police said the bus was empty and that the driver was running away.

The accident occurred at 11 p.m. Wednesday.

On Wednesday, the UP government in a statement had ordered officials to ensure that no migrant workers walk on the highway “at any cost.”

Accidents involving migrant workers walking home have been reported across the country in recent days. Last week, 16 migrant workers in a group of 20 were killed after a freight train ran over them while sleeping on the tracks in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.
