Prayagraj:
Six people died and at least 15 are admitted to a hospital after allegedly consuming illicit liquor in a Prayagraj village in Uttar Pradesh.
The tragedy took place on Friday in the village of Amilia.
Locals say the victims consumed country liquor in a store last night. Soon after, several people fell ill. The husband and wife duo who ran the liquor store have been arrested based on initial evidence.
Prayagraj District Magistrate Bhanu Chandra Goswami, the exact cause of the deaths can only be confirmed after autopsies and reports of samples of the liquor.
“A team of district officials came to the village of Amilia after receiving information about deaths from illicit liquor consumption,” the official said, adding that the liquor samples were sent for analysis.
Local residents told reporters that liquor store owners have several cases against them for selling contraband liquor, yet they have about three liquor stores in the area.
“Even after selling stolen liquor and fake liquor, these people have been running three stores in the area, there are so many cases against them,” says a local.
An elderly woman, whose son has been admitted to hospital, says her son Anil fell ill shortly after drinking liquor.
“He got sick after drinking liquor today from the store in the town of Amilia,” the woman said, fighting back tears.
The district magistrate said the case is under investigation and if convicted, the guilty will be punished.
Last year, more than 100 people died in Uttar Pradesh and neighboring Uttarakhand, leading to the arrest of more than 130 people for selling and manufacturing illegal liquor.
Since 2011, more than 175 people have died in eight doctored tragedies at UP.
