About 6.39 per cent of the total number of active Covid-19 cases in which the country needs support of the hospital, the Union health ministry, said Wednesday.

During a briefing on the COVID-19 situation, the deputy secretary in the ministry of Lav Agarwal also said about 2.94% of the active COVID-19 cases it is necessary the help of oxygen, 3% needed intensive care units (ICU) and 0.45% requires breathing assistance.

“Only about 6.39% of COVID-19 cases need the aid of oxygen or from the ICU or ventilator support; many people are recovering due to early identification. At the same time, we are also improving our health infrastructure,” he said.

“During the blockade, we have enhanced our hospital infrastructure, including the oxygen supports beds, ICU beds, and ventilators. Our efforts give us the confidence that we are ready and equipped, together with the states, to manage COVID-19 cases”, he added.

Agarwal, said the ministry of health, analysed data from the recently released the status report and found that while the cases per lakh of the population of the world, standing at 62, in India, it is found that the 7.9 persons per lakh of the population affected.

“Despite similar population, the total number of cases of COVID-19 in the top 15 of countries is 34 times greater than that of India and in spite of similar population, the total number of deaths due to COVID-19 in the 15 main countries of 83 times higher than that of India,” the joint secretary said.

It also said that until now, India has around 0.2 COVID-19 deaths per lakh of population as against the global figure of 4.1.

Among the countries with high COVID-19 victims, the US 87,180 fatalities has 26.6 deaths per lakh of the population. The united kingdom has informed 34,636 deaths and has approximately 52.1 deaths per lakh of the population.

“While our deaths are a cause for sadness, we find that the six countries that have reported more than 10,000 COVID-19 deaths, along with the states and the citizens. We have relatively been able to handle the situation, though the challenge continues,” said Agarwal.

When the blockade started, the COVID-19 recovery rate was 7.1 percent, which gradually improved to 39.62%, he said.

He said that the government will focus on strict containment measures, hand hygiene, respiratory hygiene, environmental sanitation and the conversion of physical distancing in a normal life.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (icmr) to give an answer to a question on whether the government is planning the fall of hydroxychloroquine from the COVID-19 plan of treatment, said a review of its effectiveness will take place to decide about the prophylaxis.

Chief of epidemiology and communicable diseases at icmr Raman R Gangakhedkar said 25.36 lakh COVID-19 tests have been done up to 12.30 pm on Tuesday. For the second time, more than a lakh tests were conducted in a span of 24 hours.

“There are 555 testing laboratories and 89,466 tests (are) done in icmr labs yesterday (Tuesday),” he said.
