There are currently 541 medical colleges nationwide with a capacity of 80,312 MBBS seats, the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Ashwini Kumar Choubey, said on Friday.
In a written response in the Lok Sabha, Choubey said: “Currently, there are 541 medical schools (280 government and 261 private) in the country with an admission capacity of 80,312 MBBS places per year.”
According to the minister, the number of medical schools in the country has increased by around 45 percent in the last six years.
In 2014, the number of medical schools in the country was 381. The number of medical positions has increased from 54,348 in 2014 to 80,312 in 2020, Choubey said.
The government is implementing a new scheme under which the creation of 157 medical schools was approved, and of these, 43 are already operational, he added.
“As today, in the case of government medical colleges, the respective state governments are responsible for setting the fees and in the case of unaided private medical schools, the fee structure is decided by an established committee. by the respective state government the presidency of a retired High Court judge pursuant to the instructions of the Supreme Court of India, ”said the minister.
“It is up to the committee to decide whether the rate proposed by an Institute is justified and the rate set by the committee is binding on the Institute,” he also said.
