Industrial units in the Punjab made a silent start as the government eased blockade conditions. Despite the fact that more than 54% from 2.59 lakh units in the state resumed the production of today, the operating capacity remained in the range of 30 to 40 percent.

According to the industrialists, the lack of orders, shortage of labour and of social distancing rules were the main obstacles in the start of production at full steam.

“The current capacity utilisation of the plants is less than 40 percent. It will take time to do the normal things. We have to re-think strategically the production due to social-distancing of the rules,” said SC Ralhan, president, Ludhiana Hand Tools Association.

According to the industries and commerce department data, around 1.41 lakh units are operational in the state.

In Ludhiana, 46,909 operational units of the total 95,202 registered units. Around 16,500 units resumed operations in India, 13,300 in Amritsar and 11,624 in Mohali.

Many of the industry said that although their units/factories had opened, the production was about to begin.

Harmeet Singh Riat, who engages in the sewing of the parts of the machine, said that he had opened the premises of the factory, so that the rest of the workers did not leave. “There is almost no production. We have started to visit the factories, but that does not mean that the operations are in full swing.”

The national president of the Indian Forum of Trade Badish Jindal said, “Over 52 percent of the units may be open, but there is no production, no orders, no work, and without raw material.”
