NEW DELHI: The 94 assembly constituencies that went to the polls in phase two of the Bihar elections on Tuesday registered 53.51 percent turnout and the figure is likely to rise as voting continues beyond than scheduled in various places, said the Electoral Commission.
Combined voter turnout in the two phases stood at 53.79 percent as of 5 p.m., the Commission said.
Turnout was 55.35 percent in these constituencies in the 2015 assembly elections, the EC said. The combined figure would also increase when the final figures from phase 2 are collected later in the day.
“The electoral exercise taking place in the country is by far the largest exercise in the world amid the pandemic … voter turnout in the first phase has been exceptionally good. Voter turnout has continued and the level of trust has been much higher in this phase, “said EC Secretary General Umesh Sinha.
The 94 constituencies in the second phase of the elections will decide the electoral fate of RJD leader and grand alliance ministerial chief Tejashwi Yadav and more than 1,450 other candidates.
The survey began at 7 a.m., but the time for completion has been extended by one hour to 6 p.m. to make it easier for COVID-19 patients and those with symptoms of the disease to exercise their franchise in the last hour. However, the process ended early in the areas affected by the Maoists.
Referring to the 54 electoral assemblies spread over 10 states held on Tuesday, the Commission said that Chhattisgarh had 71.99% turnout, Gujarat 57.98%, Haryana 68% and Jharkhand 62.51%.
The stake in Odisha was 68.08% and 66.57% in Madhya Pradesh. In Nagaland, the participation was 83.69%, while in Telangana it was 81.44%. In Uttar Pradesh, the share was 51.57%.
The Commission said the figure was dynamic in nature and would likely change in the next few hours.
In addition to the 28 seats in Madhya Pradesh, eight assembly seats were held in general elections in Gujarat, followed by seven in Uttar Pradesh, two in Odisha, Nagaland, Karnataka and Jharkhand, and one in Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Haryana.
Five assembly seats in Manipur and one Lok Sabha seat in Bihar will be held in bypoll on November 7.

In the second phase of the Bihar assembly elections, 6,240 voting units were deployed, of which 0.36% had to be replaced. Of the 41,362 control units, 0.37% were replaced. Similarly, of the 41,362 paper-tracking machines, 1.31 percent were replaced.
A control unit and at least voting units constitute an EVM.
In the 54 parliamentary assemblies a total of 23,250 voting units, 19,583 control units and as many paper machines were deployed. Of these 0.4 percent control units, the 0.37 percent voting units and the 1.80 percent paper tracking machines had to be replaced, Jain said.
