New Delhi:
Five states account for a high percentage of active coronavirus cases in India, the Health Ministry said tonight. Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu make up 62 percent of active COVID-19 cases in the country, Health Ministry officials told reporters in a briefing.
India’s coronavirus cases per million inhabitants are, however, much lower compared to other nations such as Brazil, which reports 28,000 cases per million inhabitants, while India has reported 2,000 cases per million inhabitants, officials said.
“The daily numbers are increasing, but you have to see all this in the context of the population. We are also evaluating more people and the positivity rate remains around 7 percent,” Health Secretary Rajesh told reporters Bhushan.
The health minister of the national capital, Satyendar Jain, said that several factors are contributing to the increase in coronavirus cases. He said that people might have gotten tired of wearing a mask for a long period of time. Festival season has started and people have started to go out in large numbers, he said. Another factor could be the general fatigue of the pandemic among people, causing people to let their guard down, Jain said.
A record rise of 83,883 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours pushed India’s tally past the 38 lakh mark, just 1.5 lakh behind Brazil, the nation with the second highest number of cases.
1,043 additional deaths related to the highly contagious disease have brought the total number of deaths to 67,376. More than 29 lakh have recovered from the infection in the country so far. Maharashtra remains the state most affected by the pandemic, followed by three southern states: Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
“There is no uniform picture across the country. In Tamil Nadu, more than 90 percent are RT-PCR tests. In some states there are more containment zones. However, I admit there are states where RT-PCR tests they are less than the optimal limit. They are under our radar and we are in contact with them to change that situation, “said the Secretary of Health.
Global coronavirus infections have skyrocketed past Rs 2.57 crore, as countries tighten restrictions to stem the health crisis that has disrupted the lives of most of humanity. More than 8.56 lakh people have died from the infection worldwide.
