Rennes:

Five people were killed after a tourist plane and a microlight collided in western France on Saturday, the local government said.

The small microlight carrying two people collided with a DA40 tourist plane with three people on board around 4:30 pm (1430 GMT) in Loches, in the department of Indre-et-Loire, the official of the local government Nadia Seghier.

“(The microlight) landed on the fence around a house without harming anyone else, (the DA40) several hundred meters away in an uninhabited area,” Seghier said. “All five people involved died.”

About 50 firefighters were called in while 30 gendarmes set up detours on the roads around the crash sites.

“At first they brought in air emergency personnel from Lyon to track the plane, which was quickly found,” the prefecture said.

So far no details have been released on the identities of the victims or the causes of the collision.
