New Delhi:
A woman was killed and two members of the security forces were injured during a counterterrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir this morning, police said. Three terrorists were also killed in the operation, they added.
Security forces launched an operation in the Batmaloo area of Srinagar after receiving information about the presence of terrorists in the area. When the security forces concentrated on the cordon, they were attacked by terrorists. Two members of the security forces personnel, including a deputy commander of the CRPF, were injured.
In the exchange of gunfire, a woman died inside her home. She has been identified as Kousar Reyaz.
While one terrorist was killed in the initial shooting, security forces have killed two more, the Kashmir Zone Police said in their latest update.
This is the fourth major shooting in the city of Srinagar this year, the highest in more than a decade. Since 2007, the city has not reported any incidents, but frequent encounters and attacks in the past nine months indicate that terrorists have been able to return to the capital of J&K.
