UNIVERSITIES and universities across the country are likely to receive three templates next week to take their end-of-semester (or end-of-year) exams online. They can administer a subjective written assessment, a multiple-choice test, or a project-based case study / assessment, all under the watchful eye of webcams.
The three models for online assessment are part of the recommendations presented this week by a government-appointed committee of online learning experts. Nageshwar Rao, vice chancellor of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), is chairman of the panel. The College Scholarship Commission is expected to publish the guidelines on college exams next week based on the committee’s report.
The panel had advised against making online exams compulsory given “diversity, local settings, student composition and student readiness, current infrastructure, and technology support.”

However, for institutions interested in conducting their year-end assessment in online mode, he has recommended three “indicative” models to those who are free to make changes.
Can be used for final exams
MANY universities can adopt online exams for seniors at least, even if they are still unsure about it. End of semester exams generally take place in May. A delay for seniors could end up affecting their entry date for new jobs or plans for further study.
Model 1
Subjective Written Exam The committee has suggested that teachers “upload the question document into the Google Classroom app using the” Quiz Assignment “option.” The test should be limited to 1.5 hours and the lot of examinees to 30 students, the report indicates. Students are expected to join Google Meet with the camera and audio and access the questionnaire through Google Classroom. Answers written on a piece of plain paper can be uploaded before the deadline.

Supervisors can monitor students through Google Meet by recording and monitoring them. Students who engage in fraudulent activity can be caught and the Unfair Media (UFM) case can be booked. The Exam Controller (COE) / Observers / Squads can also join Google Meet and monitor students, “the report states. Teachers will manually evaluate the uploaded answer scripts.
MODEL 2
Multiple Choice Question Exam The panel has suggested that the MCQ test be administered through an online monitoring service. An online supervision service uses software to monitor the examinee through video and audio so that the examination is free from fraud. The GMAT and GRE exams are done through online supervision.
Students will receive login credentials and a web link to access the exam from home. In this mode, supervisors can interrupt the student during the exam and request a 360 view of the student’s room. “Students who navigate off the exam screen may receive a warning and their exam may end after a specific number of warnings,” the report states.
Model 3
Case study and projects The project-based evaluation will consist of a written evaluation and an online or viva-voce presentation based on the written evaluation. Students will receive a problem (case study / project) two hours before the submission deadline and will be asked to upload a handwritten solution.
“After the presentation of the solution in writing, the following day teachers are required to make an online or live presentation through the Google meeting. The student will only be able to present the solution of the problem already presented ”, indicates the report.
Universities and schools across the country have been closed since March 16, when the Union government announced a closure of classrooms across the country among measures to contain the outbreak.
