CHENNAI: A day before the National Eligibility and Entry Test (NEET), three medical college applicants in Tamil Nadu committed suicide on Saturday out of fear of failure.
Jyothi Sridurga, from Madurai, daughter of police officer Murugasundaram, hanged herself at her residence on Saturday.
As for the reason for taking the extreme step, Sridurga said in a note that she had prepared well for the exam but was scared by the result. She asked not to blame anyone and conveyed her apologies to her parents for her decision.
The second suicide of the day occurred in Dharmapuri, where a boy named Aditya killed his own life. In Namakkal district, another boy named Motilal hanged himself to death.
With this, the total number of suicides of medical college applicants in Tamil Nadu increased to four in recent days.
On Wednesday, Vignesh, an aspiring medical student, committed suicide out of fear of NEETs.
Senior Deputy Minister O. Panneerselvam tweeted his grief at the student suicides.
He said that students must develop the willpower to face challenges. Panneerselvam also said that parents should also provide support for their children.
DMK President MK Stalin said in a tweet that NEET has a destabilizing effect on students, as can be seen in the death of Anitha (the first student to commit suicide due to a NEET) to Sridurga.
Stalin said he was surprised to learn that Sridurga had committed suicide out of fear of NEETs, adding that the medical school entrance exam is not an exam at all and that suicide is not the solution.
PMK founder S. Ramadoss urged the central government to cancel the exam in Tamil Nadu.
