2G mobile data services will be restored in most of the Kashmir valley starting May 12, except in the Pulwama and Shopian districts, according to the Jammu and Kashmir administration.

“Mobile data services will be restored immediately in the Kashmir Valley, except in the Pulwama and Shopian districts. However, internet speed will remain restricted to 2G only throughout the Union territory. It will be effective from May 12, ”the J-K administration said in an order.

Services were interrupted after Hizbul Mujahideen commander Riyaz Naikoo and another terrorist were killed by security forces.

Internet services were suspended at J-K in August last year after the repeal of Article 370 and the fork of the former state in two Union Territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir. Although 2G services on postpaid and broadband mobile phones have been restored, 4G services still remain suspended.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Monday ordered the immediate creation of a high-powered committee, to be chaired by the MHA Secretary, to examine disputes raised by various petitioners for the restoration of 4G internet in Jammu and Kashmir.

The supreme court ordered the formation of a committee of secretaries of the Center and Union Territory, headed by the Secretary of the MHA and also composed of the Secretary of the Ministry of Communication and the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir to investigate the matter.

The court heard several pleas for the restoration of 4G internet services in Jammu and Kashmir alleging that 2G internet services are not sufficient to carry out education and other services amid the coronavirus-induced blockade.
