NEW DELHI: In a major coronavirus outbreak at Apex Army Hospital (Research and Reference) in the Delhi cantonment, 25 patients admitted to their oncology ward have tested positive for Covid-19, even while doing more tests.
With this, more than 80 people in the service of the armed forces, along with 20 other veterans and dependent relatives, are currently admitted as Covid patients in different military hospitals across the country.
At the Army Hospital (R&R), a couple of days ago a patient in the cancer ward was found to be positive for coronavirus, the results of another 24 were positive on Monday night.
“The 25, which include 21 servants from the three Services, three dependents and a veteran, were transferred Tuesday to the nearby Army Base Hospital, which is the designated military hospital for Covid cases in the city,” an official said.
An extensive follow-up protocol for contacts, tests and quarantine is being carried out at R&R Hospital, which is the main tertiary care hospital for the country’s armed forces. “No doctor or nurse has tested positive for Covid-19 so far … more tests are in progress,” he said.
This is the second major outbreak of the highly contagious coronavirus in the armed forces after 38 sailors tested positive for Covid-19 at INS Angre, the main ground-based logistical and administrative repository of the Western Naval Command in Mumbai, last month. “Of these, 12 were released from the hospital after recovering,” said another officer.
The Navy has also quarantined more than 150 officers and sailors at its logistics base in Kolkata, INS Netaji Subhash, after two staff members showed flu-like symptoms. “The test results are yet to come, but the step has been taken as a precautionary measure,” an official said.
