206 schools operating illegally in Mumbai

BMC says these schools have not obtained the necessary approvals and advises parents not to enroll their children with them.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared 206 Private schools illegal in the city and has warned parents not to enroll their children in these schools.

According to the civic body, these schools have not obtained the necessary approvals from the competent authorities.

Of these, 162 are English schools, 16 Urdu schools, 15 Hindi and 13 Marathi Middle Schools.

Most of these schools are located in the eastern and northern suburbs of the city, while the maximum, 67, are in the M East district (Mankhurd and Govandi) in the city along with Malad, Malwani, Ghatkopar and Bhandup.

“Without getting any approval, many schools have started operating in these areas that mainly comprise slums.

The civic body has been warning parents to be wary of such schools and not to enroll their children there. We have also sent notices to these schools to shut down their operations immediately, ”said a civic official.

According to civic officials, schools must obtain prior permission from BMC, a step that is required under the Right to Education Act (RTE). However, none of these schools have applied for approval.

Officials said that a fine of 1 lakh rupees will be imposed on these schools and that they will have to obtain a certificate of no objection (NOC) from the government before they are allowed to apply for a new approval or recognition from the BMC.

Civic officials say the BMC had issued advisories earlier this year and last year to comply with the rules. However, no action was taken against them due to the shutdown.

“Since the schools are already closed, we have not taken action against those who disobey government regulations. But we will make sure that when the schools are allowed to reopen, these illegal schools remain closed or comply with the procedures to obtain recognition, “said a civic official, adding that city schools are likely to open after January. .

“We are trying to raise awareness against these types of schools so that parents do not send their children there.”
